The only fashion debate you'll ever need to worry about

I've been having a recurring conversation about what constitutes a murse, or 'man-purse' as some refer. The English language lacks some standardized criteria for the word, which really wasn't anyone's problem until male icon Jack Bauer (who's face has graced this blog and many others) appeared on TV with this bag. For more pics, check out http://www.fox.com/24/ (go to episode 1, pic 11,12 or episode 16, pic 5),

This bag has challenged the model of an ideal male, divided friends, and held a lot of guns and cool stuff Jack has used to kill people.

So what do we classify it as? Some say murse, others satchel. Webster's has no clear definition for either, so don't bother. It's up to the common person. So I'm throwing it out there, what do you think?

Make an argument for your stance, we're looking for cold logic here. No majority, no feelings. Pure critical reasoning folks. In two weeks I'll give a tally of the best arguments, and hopefully some definitions of 'satchel' and 'murse.'

I vote for satchel - I have a satchel/sidebag that is similar. A little smaller.

I think it depends what you carry. If you carry weapons, that automatically makes it a satchel. Murses are smaller, not made out of animal skin and just not as cool.

So I agree with Sid.

i would say that the bag you identify there is a satchel. usually a murse does not contain weaponry. and agreed, murses are smaller. a satchel would almost be like a messenger bag. but it's funny, because when it comes to jack bauer, you don't really need to say "don't kill the messenger".

I never carry weapons. Does that mean my bag can be nothing but a murse? I think I am completely fine with that if that is indeed the case. Actually, in that case, go here for how to wear your murse in the summer and here for how to wear it in the winter.

Jack Bauer both carries a murse and is the man...yes, I'm calling it a murse. In everyday talk, I would normally just call it a shoulder bag, but how boring is that...

I'm tossing my hand in with the satchel people. the combination of size, colour, and material take it out of the purse category. You can have big purses, but not without them being decorated with stuff....

so yeah, looks like Satchel camp wins on amac's blog. Saaweeeet!

i've been doing a lot of thinking..

the only reason why the vote is overwhelmingly towards satchel is because
most guys are just TOO pansy to admit that they'd ever carry a murse.
And then the two other girls that voted OBVIOUSLY do not know what a murse is and are allowing what other guys who are also afraid of being labelled metro for carrying a murse (such as brad morrice..who is influenced by andy smits) influence their definitions.

The only sane person around here is Joshua Robinson.

(and i realize that everyone who reads this blog and doesn't know me--which is the vast majority..) must think i am a huge jerkface. hahaa.

oh well.

has ANYONE ever seen the murse that drew carries around (and carried around North Africa for 6 weeks)? The only thing that fits in that tiny thing is his pocket esv and even then it's pretty full. the only weapon you could possibly fit in there is the gum that blew up in Mission Impossible I. The other day I actually saw andrew wearing what could almost be called form fitting pants.

amac's going metro!

lydia dishing out the guns here. calling us pansies.

anyhow, i never said i don't wear a murse.. i just know the difference between a murse and satchel. people may be a bit off by defining murse and satchel by their function. Female assasins usually store their guns in their purses, that doesn't change it to a satchel.. so I lean more towards style. my little black bag is no doubt a murse.. but Bauer's big forest green thing is beyond the limits of 'metro fashion.'

and yeh, my jeans are tight, almost as tight as my argumentation. BLAM!

That is clearly a satchel. Or maybe a Bauer-bag.

Breathe in some Reading air for me. How are the clouds this time of year? Nice and grey?

Ryan L. made a really good point. Paraphrased, 'at the core of this debate is the of how do we define things?'
Do we look to appearance, function, authority? Ladies and gentlemen, we have tapped into the very roots of epistemology and language here.

I always thought the word murse was used for any kind of bag that a man would carry. Satchel would be a subdivision of the category...

(wow, i sound really sarcastic. i'm really not being sarcastic)
